Cleantech market major growth sector for UK economy

By 3p Contributor
The cleantech market is a major growth sector for the UK economy, Michael Rudd, partner at legal firm Bird & Bird, highlighted at ecoConnect’s recent Green in the City Forum which discussed where investment is heading in today’s cleantech market.
“Solar is a busy market,” explained Matt Bonas, fellow partner at the legal firm. “It is very bullish right now, though the margins are tight. We’ve a lot of German investors interested in this sector. Energy efficiency too isn’t just the low-hanging fruit, it’s fruit on the ground.” Michael Ware, partner at BDO LLP and head of infrastructure and renewable energy finance, emphasised growth in Anaerobic Digestion, adding that wind power is currently proving difficult.
The forum also referenced the advent of bluetech where water efficiency, filtration and hydro projects are gaining ground.
But both big and small cleantech clients are struggling to find funds, added Bonas. He was encouraged however by the likes of the Gates Foundation which is helping to fund very small companies. Gil Levy, partner at Sustainable Development Capital Ltd, voiced hopes for the Green Investment Bank which he anticipated might change the UK’s traditionally conservative and risk averse attitude to cleantech investment.
