Green workplaces lead to behavioural changes at home, says new report

By 3p Contributor

Green practices in the workplace appear to influence the actions of employees in their private lives.
A total of 73% of US adults participating in environmental and social responsibility efforts at work were found by the New York-based communications consultancy Gibbs & Soell to be inclined to make sustainable choices at home.

The same proportion said they wanted to know about companies’ sustainability and green policies, and wished their own employers would adopt more sustainability business practices. Overall, 72% of Americans were found to want this information.
As many as 80% of the employees whose work involved sustainability reported they encouraged others to adopt green practices and to take part in social responsibility projects.

In addition, three-quarters of all adult employees agreed they were more likely to buy a company’s goods or services if they knew it had environmentally responsible objectives.

Despite this enthusiasm, Gibbs & Soell found too many companies ignored the opportunity to create green consumers.
Two-thirds of employees interviewed were uncertain whether anybody at their company was responsible for sustainability at work or said nobody had that task. Nearly a fifth, or 19%, said their company did not promote sustainability in any way.
