Research by the Centre for Energy-Efficient Telecommunications (CEET) and Bell Labs has revealed that the information technology industry – encompassing the internet, video, voice and other cloud services – now accounts for around 2% of global carbon emissions. At more than 830 million tons of CO2, the IT sector is roughly equivalent to the aviation industry, but is expected to double by 2020. The researchers say that controlling emissions requires more accurate models than currently exist.
