Carbon dioxide levels hit the historic 400.03 ppm mark in May according to monitoring at Mauna Loa (NOAA). Greenpeace UK executive director John Sauven has since commented: “This is a landmark moment for humankind, a milestone every bit as important as when the global population passed six then seven billion.
The implications are grave, we’re facing major adverse planetary changes, our seasons are shifting faster than we thought possible, but even now there is still cause for hope. Last year China installed more pollution-free renewable energy than coal, and it was the same in the USA. The tools exist to halt the relentless loading of our atmosphere with heat-trapping gases, all we need to do is tap the ingenuity of humankind to deploy them.”
