Air New Zealand has been a sustainable leader in aviation for some time, particularly as it pertains to trying out biofuels. But another, possibly more impressive impact has been made by the company's efforts to restore ecosystems and national parks in their home country. Why would an airline invest in biodiversity and conservation? Aside from being a nice thing to do, it makes a lot of sense when eco-tourism is a major piece of your business.
At Sustainable Brands 2013, I had a chance to talk to James Gibson who is in charge of partnerships at Air New Zealand. By partnering with the NZ department of conservation, the airline has raised considerable funds to help restore native habitats and re-establish native species. The result, over the past year, is four fully funded projects in high profile locations.
