French MEP Alain Cadec is to succeed Anna Rosbach as champion of the Waste Free Ocean foundation which is involved in the collection and recycling of marine waste.
The foundation was set up three years ago under the leadership of former EU Commissioner Maria Damanaki and former MEP Anna Rosbach. What started as a pilot project to encourage fishermen and the plastics industry to work together on the elimination of marine litter resulted in worldwide actions and acceptance of joining forces in cleanup operations and awareness raising campaigns on marine litter.
“WFO is carrying out remarkable work to clean up our coastlines which are contaminated by plastic waste. The idea is simple: the waste is collected at sea by fishermen, then recycled and recovered,” commented Cadec.
“The quality of water is for our common good and I am very committed to it. This is why I agreed to be WFO’s champion.”
“Plastic marine waste is a scourge of the marine environment. The projects carried out by WFO are an example to follow: we must rely on those who use the sea, especially fishermen, and develop a real circular economy centered on waste recovery.”

Cadec is chair of the European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee, which is involved in all sustainability aspects of fishing in Europe.
