Small and medium-sized businesses with caring policies towards individuals, the community and the environment will be rewarded in Hong Kong's first SME Living Business awards scheme. The international banking group HSBC, backed by the Business Environment Council, will give the awards under the Living Business programme, which it set up to help smaller companies to be more productive and profitable by implementing socially and environmentally responsible practices.
The top category is the diamond award, which will be for just one winner and carries a cash prize of HK$150,000 ($19,500, £10,700). This is followed by three emerald awards, each of HK$50,000, and six ruby awards of HK$10,000 each. In the fourth category qualifying businesses receive a certificate of merit. HSBC has put no limit on the number of businesses that can receive the certificate.
The awards, being given next year, are open to any Hong Kong company with annual sales up to HK$50million. The criteria are commitment to environmental protection, excellence in employee management, achievements in community development and management of stakeholder relationships.
