The second annual sustainability report from Asia Pacific Resources International - known as April - the plantation fibre producer with one of the world's biggest pulp and paper mills, contains direct comment from two non-governmental organizations, the Worldwide Fund for Nature and Yayasan Riau Mandiri.
A.J. Devanesan, president of Sumatra-based April, said: 'We always prefer to talk directly rather than receive criticism second-hand, and the value we place on such communications is demonstrated clearly in this sustainability report. This is evident from the fact that we did not shy away from and even included more information on hot topics like conservation in Tesso Nilo and illegal logging.'
The report says April aims to achieve sustainability by 2009 and promises to carry out continual research and development and introduce more species diversity in its plantations.
The second report, like the first, follows the Global Reporting Initiative framework and was independently verified by Bureau Veritas, a prominent international health and safety, environmental quality and certification organization.
