US govt turning blind eye to supply chain human rights

By 3p Contributor

The US government – the largest single purchaser in the global economy – is turning a blind eye to harms caused by its procurement laws and practices, including human rights violations such as child labour, environ-mental destruction and modern day slavery, according to a report from the International Corporate Accountability Roundtable (ICAR).

Aiming to inspire such reform, ICAR commissioned three legal experts – Robert Stumberg, Anita Ramasastry, and Meg Roggensack – to conduct an in-depth analysis into US federal procurement across several sectors, including apparel, agriculture, electronics, mineral extraction, and logistical and security services.

They found that, throughout its supply chain, the US government directly or indirectly contributes to violations of human rights.
