Three healthcare companies top this year’s global green league table published by Newsweek, the US weekly current affairs magazine.
The list is headed by Biogen, the group based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which specialises in neurodegenerative, blood and autoimmune therapies. Biogen’s rating is 89.2%.
The second spot goes to Shire with 85.1%. Shire is a biopharmaceuticals company, originating in the UK but now based in the Irish Republic.
Third place, is occupied by Allergan, with 84.2%. Allergan, headquartered in Irvine, California, specialises in ophthalmic pharmaceuticals, dermatology, neuroscience, urology and cosmetics.
The highest-place UK company is Reckitt Benckiser, fourth with 84.1%. The group, in Slough, Berkshire, concentrates on home, hygiene and health products.
The others in the world top 10 are: Adobe Systems, the US information technology company, fifth with 82.6%; Swisscom, the telecoms provider based in Bern, sixth with 81.6%; Unilever, the British-Dutch consumer products group, whose manufactures include food, beverages, cleaning agents and personal care goods, seventh with 81.3%; Broadcom, the US information technology company in Irvine, California, eighth with 81.3%; Roche Holding, the Swiss pharmaceuticals and diagnostics group based in Basel, ninth with 84%; and BT, the leading UK telecoms company, tenth with 80.4%.
A parallel listing of US companies published by Newsweek is headed by Biogen, Allergan, Adobe and Broadcom.
Two other globally known groups in the top ten are Hershey, the largest chocolate manufacturer in the US, based in Pennsylvania, which is ranked sixth with 78.7%, and Coca-Cola Enterprises, the international drinks maker in Atlanta, which lies eighth with 75.2%.
The US top ten is completed by: Sigma-Aldrich, the life science and high technology company in St Louis, fifth with 81.3%; Ecolab, the global provider of water, hygiene and energy technologies, headquartered in St Paul, Minnesota, seventh with 77.8%; Aflac, the largest provider of supplemental insurance in the US, based in Columbus, Georgia, ninth with 74.9%; and Mead Johnson Nutrition, the baby food manufacturer centred on headquarters in Illinois and Indiana, tenth with 74.7%.
Newsweek conducted the research with the California consultancy HIP Investor, the Toronto investment specialist Corporate Knights Capital, and sustainability experts from NGOs, academia and accountancy bodies.
