Those of you who have been reading 3p for a while know I've been attending the South by Southwest Interactive Media Conference in Austin for years. Most people in the know consider it to be the most important conference of the year for anything related to web technology and new media. However, many of us in so called "green" media have always wished we could instill a deeper sustainability component into the event. We've often asked, if techies can save the world, why don't they?
I'm excited to announce that a new sustainability tradition begins this October with the first annual SXSWeco conference in Austin. The event (of which 3p will be a media partner) is billed as "three days of diverse, top-level programming for professionals in business, government, non-profits and academia who want to look at environmental and sustainability issues though a fresh lens, develop new collaborations, and contribute to innovative solutions to the most pressing challenges facing the environment, the economy and civil society."
In other words, it's going to be much more than the usual techy crowd. Most importantly, SXSWeco joins a small group of sustainability minded conferences that take place outside the Bay Area (venerable as it may be). Like Opportunity Green in Los Angeles, SXSWeco will widen the conversation from the heart of Texas using all the brand cache SXSW has going for it - and that's a lot to say.
Naturally, many San Francisco folks will make the trek. Last night, TriplePundit had the honor of introducing the conference to some of the Bay Area's leading thinkers on sustainability at an evening reception at the Hub. Judging by the turnout, and the buzz in the room. SXSW is onto something good.
We hope you'll join us in Austin this October 4-6.
*Special thanks to 3p's indispensable editor and business strategist, Jen Boynton who forwent important shmoozing duties to keep the crowd lubricated by tending bar... as well as Kate Drane for organizing logistics and the SXSW crew (Russel, Chris, and the two Melissa's for making the trek west).
